The Tourist, avoid beautiful women on trains

The Tourist

I remember traveling on a train with my Grandfather from Paris to Venice. The beautiful countryside flying by as we ate cheese on pieces of a long baguette. I remember sitting in front of a youth hostel drinking wine with a beautiful girl from New York. As we watched the gondolas go by, I remember thinking that this was the happiest I’ve ever been. All of these memories came flooding in as I sat and watched the elegant dance of words between Frank Tupelo (Johnny Depp) and Elise Clifton-Ward (Angelina Jolie). The wonderful Musical Score creates a perfect balance of ambiance and suspense. It felt as if I was actually there having dinner by the Tronchetto – Lido di Venezia or being chased be foreign mobsters.

Synopsis

Johnny Depp stars as an American tourist whose playful dalliance with a stranger leads to a web of intrigue, romance and danger in The Tourist. During an impromptu trip to Europe to mend a broken heart, Frank (Depp) unexpectedly finds himself in a flirtatious encounter with Elise (Angelina Jolie), an extraordinary woman who deliberately crosses his path. Against the breathtaking backdrop of Paris and Venice, their whirlwind romance quickly evolves as they find themselves unwittingly thrust into a deadly game of cat and mouse.

Review

I love a movie that keeps me on my toes and at the same time can bring me into the story and make me care about the characters. When Frank gets pulled into the canal by a boat driven by Elise, I cringed, knowing that those canals are almost completely sewage.

The Tourist succeeds in a way that so many movies don’t now days, it truly entertains. Is Frank a school teacher tourist, or is he a billion dollar thief? Is Elise a thief’s girlfriend or is she something else. The unknowing of who a character really is until the end always seems to draw me in and keep me interested in what will happen next. I thoroughly enjoyed this movie till the very end and think Angelina Jolie and Johnny Depp both deserve Golden Globe’s® for their acting in this film.

  1. Thanks, Morgan. I just recently got Netflix and so these movie reviews are really helping me make better selections. Of course it will be awhile til this comes out, but I'll definately get it, if I don't see it at the theatre.
